DIY Enthusiasts and the Honeycomb Retaining Systems?

We have put together a graphical representation of the steps involved for constructing your own Honeycomb walls.

Step 1: Excavation and Foundation

A. Wall Layout and Excavation

  1. Survey and stake the location and general limits for the Honeycomb wall construction
  2. Ensure the Honeycomb blocks are along proper alignment, within property boundaries and construction easements
  3. Proceed with general excavation for the wall

B. Foundation and Construction

  1. Stake out wall for foundation excavation
  2. Excavate trench to create a minimum foundation thickness and width, as specified by the Honeycomb engineer.
  3. Place, level and correct concrete foundation for Honeycomb blocks
  4. For walls less than 1.2 m a foundation of stone/sand aggregate may be acceptable
  5. If required, install subsoil drainage as per engineer's design
  6. The foundation must be level and follow the contours as required

Step 2: First Course of Honeycomb Blocks

  1. Check foundation surface is smooth and level
  2. String-line the wall location. Pay particular attention to exact location of curves, corners, etc
  3. Install first course of Honeycomb blocks, embedding the block into the concrete and checking the level of the Honeycomb blocks as placed

B. Backfilling

  1. Recheck wall location
  2. Use topsoil or on site soil to fill inside Honeycomb block and behind the wall
  3. Place and compact infill soil behind the wall
  4. Place fill soil in front of Honeycomb blocks

Step 3: Placement and Backfilling of Honeycomb Blocks

  1. Install successive courses of Honeycomb blocks
  2. If the subsoil drainage has been installed ensure the drainage aggregate is level with or slightly above the top of the block unit below
  3. Clean debris of the top of the blocks
  4. Move the Honeycomb block to engage shear connections and establish proper setback, consistent with Honeycomb recommendations
  5. Place and compact infill soil behind the wall

Step 4: Completion of the Honeycomb Wall

  1. Continue the wall to the full required height using step 3
  2. Place backfill and compact final row
  3. Place topsoil and vegetate the slopes above and around the wall

Enjoy the way Honeycomb Walls will change the shape and feature of your landscape.
